When you’re short, you run into a lot of restrictions. You can’t ride that rollercoaster, you can’t enjoy that awesome concert, and you sure as heck can’t reach the cupboards with the good plates (you know which ones).

Now, I’ve accepted a lot of these limitations, but you know what I won’t stand for? All those so-called “style don’ts” for petite girls. That’s where I draw the line. This girl is gonna wear whatever she wants! Are you with me?!

That being said, it never hurts to make sure that your clothes are flattering on you, which can be a little harder if you’re under 5’4”. Take horizontal stripes. I actually didn’t know that these were on the no-no list, but it makes sense. Horizontal stripes supposedly make you look wider and thereby shorter (talk about a double whammy!), which is a huge bummer.

The good news is that there are plenty of workarounds to make sure that those stripes work for you. Here are my top six tricks for pulling that off!

1. TRY COLOR BLOCKING

Get yourself a top that’s only partially striped—say, from the collarbone down. This breaks up the print really nicely and makes sure that your lil’ frame isn’t overwhelmed by stripes.

2. GO FOR THIN STRIPES

While I may not be following this tip here (don’t tell on me!), I do tend to stick to it most of the time. Thin stripes are great because they actually help lengthen the body!

3. ADD LAYERS

When you’re picking out your outfit, try to combine your striped top with solid pieces. Even better—layer a solid jacket or blazer over it. This hides most of the stripes (and makes you look like a preppy style pro!)

4. PICK FORM-FITTING PIECES

This tip goes for pretty much all petite clothes, but it’s especially important here. Loose clothes hide that gorgeous bod of yours, but ones that hug you help make you appear taller!

5. WEAR A BELT

If you do happen to be wearing something that’s got a looser fit (like a t-shirt dress), think about adding a thin belt. This helps accentuate your waist, which is Golden Rule #1 for petite dressing!

6. EXPERIMENT WITH DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS

Now this is one tip that I’m following like a pro! The flare sleeves of my top have diagonal stripes, and this is majorly helpful. The varying directions guide your eyes up and down—which, according to physics, makes you look taller.

So there you have it! If you were ever afraid of the style gods smiting you for wearing horizontal stripes, you can rest easy knowing that you can totally rock them. Try these out and let me know what works for you!
